I purchased the book “Modern Crochet Mandalas”, by the Editors at Interweave. Here is the first one, called Harvest Moon. It is designed by Stephanie White. It was not the easiest pattern to follow, but not too bad either.

Edie Eckman challenged her followers do make granny squares. She showed one example, and she provided the pattern. The rest was up to us. Here is a link to her original post.
First, I did it in a variegated yarn.
Then, I crocheted each row in a different color. I was going for a flower look, but I think I missed. Didn’t have three shades of any color in yarn I wanted to use.
I could have gone on to make more, but I have so many other things to do…

I’ve noticed in some books, when they give directions and show pictures, sometimes the directions and pictures don’t seem to match. I did this sample by looking at the picture of their sample.
I did this sample by following the directions. They are close, but not exactly the same. I suppose you could make your project using either method. I mean, it is your project!
